The former military airbase is still providing space for a diverse range of training exercises this year. In March, for example, a flying squadron of the North Rhine Westphalian police force was trained in a new technique of fighting forest fires. Using so-called Bambi Buckets, which can collect water from mobile containers, helicopters flew training exercises over the site. The two water containers, which have a capacity of 36 cubic metres, were placed in front of the former fire station. Niederkrüchten’s fire brigade organized and supported the three-week drill.
